Juried Show and upcoming one man show

Mon May 4, 2009, 6:09 PM

2 May 2009 -update
My one man show at the BLY Fine Arts Center in Eupora, MS is up for another week. I have photos up at [link] The reception went quite well and at least 150 folks showed up! This was cool, because the place is in a small town about 30 minutes from where I live, and it was nice to see so many people make the drive over. We had good exposure in the local newspapers, which helped. The lifestyles editor actually came to the show and took some photos, one of which she put in the paper. Although I did not have prices on my things there, it looks like I will be unloading at least two! Plus, several people have bought some prints after seeing the show. I really enjoyed talking to art students from Mississippi State University who came to the show. They had some good questions. Of course, my stuff always elicits questions-how long did it take, what kind of drugs do you do, where do you start, do you have bad dreams? I also got to talk to some local high school art students later in the week who visited the show with their teacher. Their reactions ranged from "this is really cool" to "what is art and why am I here". Many thanks to Dylan Karges and the Eupora Arts Council for this opportunity. They are really trying to get something going in this small town. Hopefully, their plans will come to fruition!

I had one of my pictures, Zabulation [link] accepted into the Annual Cotton District Arts Festival Juried Show, which was held this past weekend in Starkville, MS. The festival and show has grown considerably and is now one of the premier festivals of its type in our area. The juried show is open to anybody living in the Southeast and there are usually entries from several states. I was happy to win first place and the $500 prize in the drawing and painting category with Zabulation. I didn't think it would do that well, because most of the paintings accepted for the show were landscapes, but maybe the differentness helped. I enjoyed the comments some people made. One older lady talking with another mentioned that I always seemed to win something there, but she just did not like it at all, it creeped her out. I was standing there listening (she didn't know me) and I agreed with her, that it was quite creepy, and the artist must be really strange! My wife Julie had a photograph accepted in the show, and although it did not win anything, we were quite excited that her first entry into a juried show made the cut!

Only a few more days until my one man show in Eupora, Mississippi at the BLY Fine Arts Center. This is a small town about 25 miles from Starkville, where I livc. They are trying to get an arts movement going there and have been putting on some art shows, plays, etc. I brought my stuff there the other day and I will have about 55 framed pictures hanging. Hopefully, some people make the drive over! The building itself is an old theater, but very rustic at this point (meaning old), but it has character and a certain artistic feeling to it, so maybe it will work out.
